Good Evening Parents and Guardians,

This is your principal Mr. Michael A Jones. I want to let you know that I have completed the grade level expectations meeting with each class. I shared with the scholars the importance of Trusting the Process. I explain that the process of attending school and being on time each day for class, keeping an organized notebook, studying nightly regardless if the teacher assign homework or not and following simple directions and rules are tried and true processes that will yield success. Based on their reactions I believe the meetings were well received by all of the scholars.

August 7, 2017

Good Evening Parent and Guardians,

This is your principal Mr. Michael A Jones. I just wanted to let you know that we had a great first day. Scholars were on point as it relates to reporting to class on time and following basic school rules. Tomorrow I will begin class expectation meetings. This will be my opportunity to meet with scholars by class to share what is expected from a Stephenson High School scholar.

I do have one additional bit of exciting news. The Dekalb County School Districts is kicking off the Digital Dreamer Project. In our efforts to ensure that all children have an equal opportunity to learn and leverage technology, the Digital Dreamers Program is working to bridge the divide for our scholars, while also building globally competitive leaders of the future. Through the Digital Dreamers 1 Million Project we will provide 25,000 mobile hotspots to eligible high school students. These devices will provide each household up to 3GB per month of free internet connectivity. Families of eligible children will not be required to pay anything for the device, nor will the district, the cost will be incurred by Sprint or the Sprint Foundation. This afternoon your scholar was given information and an application to get the free hotspot. The hotspots will be distributed on a first come first serve bases so it is important that you submit the completed application to the main office. Again it will be on a first come first served bases for eligible scholars.

If your scholar does not have their application, you can go to our website download the document and have your scholar to bring it into the main office. You can also see other projects that a part of the Digital Dreamers Project.

Thank you, have a great evening and remember our Theme, Jaguars, All In G2G Geared to Greatness.

August 5, 2017

Good Morning Parents and Guardians,

This is your principal of Stephenson High School, Mr. Michael A Jones. I hope you are excited as we are about the first day of school this Monday, August 7, 2017. Here a few things I wanted to share before the start of school.

Scholars will be able to enter the building at 7:35am. At that time they will be allowed to go to breakfast in the main cafeteria. At 7:50 am they will be allowed to proceed to their homeroom class receive their class schedules. Scholars will follow the schedule issued. If there is a discrepancy or issue with their schedule, they will submit a written schedule change form to the counselor. The counselors will work quickly to address the request. The first day of school our focus is to have all one thousand one hundred sixteen scholars in class. Counselors will have limited time to conference as this is their number one priority.

If your scholar will drive to school the cost for a parking decal is $40. Please have your scholars to see Mr. Wardlow, Assistant Principal to purchase their parking decals. Scholars will have two weeks to purchase their decals. Please read the Parking Privilege Contract carefully when your scholar brings it home to you to complete. The student parking area has move to the side of the Freshman Academy due to construction materials being stored on the rear parking lot. Scholars that drive to school will enter the school at the front main entrance.

Please continue to talk with your scholar about dress to school. We do not have a uniform policy, however, we do have a dress code. Please refer to the scholar handbook located on the school’s website for more details. A good rule of thumb when comes to scholar dress “that if you have doubts on whether an item of clothing is a violation of dress code, it probably is a violation of dress code”. We really do not want our scholars to miss instructional time to correct their dress or contact you about the violations.

Electronic devices are to be turned off and placed out of site once scholars arrive to campus. This include headphones dangling around the ears or on the shoulders. Please talk with your scholar about this as we will monitoring this day one.

We truly miss our scholars and are excited about Monday. We also are positive we will have another great school year. Have a great weekend and remember our theme Jaguars, ALL IN, G2G Geared to Greatness.

Finally, parents have your scholar to go to the website for our Summer Reading List. Parents reading is like riding a bike. If you haven’t rode a bike in while, you will eventually remember how to ride it again, but it will take a while and you may experience a fall or two. Reading is the same way. When scholars fail to read for extended periods of time, like during summer break, they lose fluency and reading stamina which is the ability to read longer passages. It is critical that your scholar reads throughout the summer. Scholar that read more have an extensive vocabulary and better writing skills. Please please make sure your scholar gets a title from the list. All of the books can be found in the public libraries.

This is your principal Mr. Michael A Jones.

I am calling to let you know that things are going well. Teachers are still teaching and scholars are still learning. You should continue to expect homework and assignments for your scholar until the end of the school year. Parents I do need your assistance. Please talk with your scholar about scholar dress. Now that the weather is getting warmer it imperative that they dress appropriately and this includes shoes. Shower shoes, bedroom shoes etc… are not allowed. Our entire school is climate controlled and comfortable the entire day. It would be tragic to have your scholar to miss class during this crucial time of the school year because of the dress code. If you or your scholars have specific questions about our dress code, it is outline on page 7 of the Scholar Handbook located on our school’s website.

April 22, 2017

Good Morning Parents and Guardians,

This is your principal Mr. Michael A Jones. Starting Monday, April 24th we begin our Georgia Milestones End of Course Testing.

Yesterday I spoke to all of the scholars that will be testing Monday. I encouraged them to take time this weekend to review again for the exam. This review session will be free of earbuds or head phones and the television. They are to use all of the resources like study guides and notebooks given to them to prepare for the exam. So parents please help me by ensuring that your scholar review in that fashion this weekend.

I also reminded the scholars that cell phones and electronic devices are not allowed in the testing environment. If an electronic device is discovered during the testing it will cause their test to be invalid.

Finally, it is critical that scholars gets enough rest the night before and eat a good breakfast the day of testing. In addition it is important that they get to school before time. Next week testing begins each day at 8:10am. Scholars that are late to school are in a rush and become frustrated. This rush and frustrated feeling can cause them not to perform their best during their testing. So let us make plans to arrive to school early if we drop our scholars off to school in the mornings.

Thank you, have a great weekend and remember our theme, Jaguars G2G Geared to Greatness.

Good Morning Parents and Guardians,

This is your principal Mr. Michael A Jones. Currently we are 12 days into this semester. Now is a perfect time for you to check your scholar's mandatory notebooks in their core content classes. Look for the course syllabus, dated notes or activities within the last two days in the notebook. Remember a well-organized and up to date notebook is a great indicator that your scholar is on track and has a great chance in being successful in that class.

Parents also encourage scholars to attend tutorial now. They should not wait until they fall behind to attend tutorials. Even if your scholar says that they are fine in the class, attending tutorial regularly keeps them in the know as it relates to the course information.

School will be closed Monday, January 16th in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday. We shared with our scholars yesterday that the observance of Dr. King's birthday on Monday is not a day off but a "day on" to celebrate the legacy of this famous American.

Please ask your scholars to see their notebooks for their core content courses. You should at least see the course syllabus that explains the expectation and several days of dated notes. Remember a well-organized and up to date notebook is a great indicator that your scholar will be successful in class.

Thank you, have a great weekend and remember our theme, Jaguars, ALL IN, G2G Geared to Greatness.

Good Evening Parents,

This is your principal Mr. Michael A Jones. I wanted to let you know that our scholars received their report cards for 1st Semester. Please be on the lookout for the great news. I also want to share that yesterday I completed the Class Expectation Meetings with each grade level. During the meetings I shared with the scholars the pass failure rates of key courses. The data was okay, however it was not at the level that we know our scholars can achieve. I also shared with them some of the main reasons scholars were not successful last semester.

Here are the major things that I shared with them:

Keeping a Notebook – Keeping a notebook is critical A notebook keeps our scholars organized and on track. Also notebooks are required in all core content classes.

Things like studying on a regular basis and developing questions to bring back to the

Doing Homework nightly – homework is not just completing work or problems assigned by the teacher, it is a time to review what the teacher has covered for the day. Even if an assignment is not given by the teacher a wise scholar will review what is covered in class to ensure that they truly understand.

Attend Tutorials regularly– too many time scholars attend tutorial when they are behind. Attending tutorials regularly will ensure the scholar stays on top of everything.

We look forward to successful second semester. Have a great evening and remember our theme, Jaguars, All IN, G2G Geared to Greatness.

One final announcement for this evening. The varsity basketball game verses MLK for this evening has been rescheduled due to plumbing issues at the school. As soon as the new date of the game has been established we will share it with you.
