March 28, 2020

Good Morning Parents and Guardians,

This is your principal of Stephenson High School Mr. Jones.  Parents as you may have heard by now, the Dekalb County School District will remain closed until April 24, 2020. This decision was made in collaboration with and following guidance received from the DeKalb County Board of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Public Health, the Georgia Department of Education and the Governor’s Office.

With this additional time that we will be away from the building, please make sure you are continuing to establish rituals and routines as it relates to your scholars engaging in their virtual learning. As stated before, teachers will be available during regular school hours to assist scholars, which are 8:10am – 3:13pm. Scholars should log into Verge during their scheduled class time to communicate with teachers. Parents, I will continue to drive this point of developing rituals and routines as Virtual Learning leaves a digital footprint. As I monitored the system, I see the vast majority of our scholars are engaged on the platform, however, some are logging in after 9:30am. As a part of developing rituals and routines we cannot abandon the established bedtimes that we have for our scholars. Even during virtual learning, scholars need to be rested in order to function at their best.

Parents the district will not issue progress reports at this time. This Tuesday, March 31st, the District will implement a teacher planning day. Your scholars should use Tuesday, March 31st, as a study hall day to get caught up on missing assignments, studying and to recharge. Teachers will not be available to work with them on Tuesday.  As an additional support, parents, you can go to our website and click on Social Work Corner. Information about our school social worker is available along with available resources.

The DeKalb County School District will take our traditional spring break the week of April 6-10, 2020. There will be no digital learning during this week.

Finally, on behalf of my entire faculty and staff, I want to say thank you parents for everything that you are doing. A lot of our staff members have school aged children and they can identify with the added challenges you are experiencing balancing this new normal. So, do not hesitate to reach out to them to discuss any concern that you may have about assignments, due dates etc… They really care.

Enjoy the remainder of your weekend and remember our theme, Jaguars, All IN, G2G Geared to Greatness.

March 21,2020

Good Morning Parents and Guardians,

This is your principal of Stephenson High School, Mr. Jones.

Parents I want to begin by saying how proud I am of our scholars, teachers and you parents for your commitment and determination as we navigated our first week of virtual learning.  As adults we understand that the only constant thing in life is change, and I must say we are off to a good start of dealing with our “new normal.”

In communicating with our teachers, parents and some scholars on-line and through conference calls, we began the week with some connectivity issue with Verge, the district’s official digital platform. However, with the hard work of the school district’s IT department, by mid- week these issues became fewer and fewer. In addition, the district has established a Help Desk where scholars and parents can call for assistance.  The number is 678-676-1188.  I also strongly recommend that you communicate with your scholar’s teachers through email if you are having issues too.

We also noticed that at the start of the week, most of our scholars logged into their classes and communicated regularly with their teachers. However, towards the end of the week the activity decreased.  Parents, it is important that you work with your scholars to establish rituals and routines for their digital learning.  Begin by establishing a designated area in your home for them to physically move to and then establish specific times during the day that they are to be engaged in their coursework.  These two small adjustments along with monitoring their progress go a long way to creating their new ritual and routines.

Finally, we encourage scholars to submit their work.  We understand that when we first began digital learning, it was communicated that scholars will have two weeks to submit assignments when we return to school.  This has not changed. However, it is impossible for scholars to know if what they are doing is correct or if they actually understand concepts if teachers cannot give them feedback or grade their work.  In addition, if scholars wait until we return to complete these assignments, along with completing the work that will be assigned when they return, it may be overwhelming.  Parents, please take a very close look at the actual assignments and submittal dates established by teachers for the assignments and you will find that they are extremely reasonable.  Again, I strongly encourage that you speak directly with the teacher through email.  You will find that they are willing to work with scholars and you. I promise.

Please go to our website and click on Virtual Learning Support for Students to view the latest letter from Superintendent Tyson for updates on topics ranging from state testing to graduation plans.

Again, I want you to know that I am extremely proud of you all.  As we continue to establish our “new normal”, know that it is even more important that we live our theme, Jaguars, ALL IN, G2G Geared to Greatness.

March 15, 2020

Parents as a reminder, Teachers will provide scholar with a virtual learning assignment that is content-specific and relevant beginning tomorrow, March 16, 2020 until further notice for each of their classes. Each assignment will be aligned to the standards and what the scholars are currently learning. Finally, parents/guardians you may visit the school Monday, March 16, 2020 to pick up scholar's personal belongings/chromebooks etc. from their lockers if needed. The school will be open from 8am - 1pm.  This is an adjusted time from the one that was sent out via calling post Friday.

February 19, 2020

Good Evening Junior Parents and Guardians,

This is your principal of Stephenson High School Mr. Jones.  I am calling you to tell you about exciting news that we have shared with your 11th grade scholar through their 11th grade classes.  On Wednesday, March 25th we will have SAT Day at Stephenson High School.  What this means is that the official SAT Exam will be offered during the school day at Stephenson High School for our Junior Scholars.   In order to be eligible to take the exam, your scholar must be classified as a junior as it relates to earned credits.  Then your scholar must use the QR Code that is located in the counseling office and in junior level class like American Lit and US History.  This must be done by Friday, February 21, 2020 by the end of the day.

If your scholar is interested in attending a college after graduation this is a great opportunity to see where they are as it relates to the SAT.  What is even more exciting about SAT DAY is we will be able to look at the data from the test and develop tutorial sessions on areas that the scholars need more assistance to prepare for a re-take of the SAT.

Remember your junior scholar must be classified as a junior based on credits and scan the QR Code located in their Junior classes or the counseling center by Friday, February 21, 2020.

November 23, 2019

Good Morning Parents,

This is your principal of Stephenson High School Mr. Jones. I would like to wish each of you a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday.

Time seemed to have flown this semester.  Here we are at the end of November with the Thanksgiving holiday around the corner. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you why I am so thankful thus far this year.

In the spirit of loving others, our scholars have embraced a number of opportunities this fall to reach out to our greater community.  Sponsors and members of Ladies and Men of Distinction, two of our scholar clubs at the school, participated in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in October in Downtown Atlanta.   Members of our Beta Club and eligible scholars and staff of Stephenson High School donated blood in our October Red Cross Blood Drive to give the gift of life for others in the Atlanta Area.  Our NJROTC has participated with the Empty Stocking Fund Program by collecting at various Kroger Stores around the Stone Mountain Area.  I can go on and on, but know that your children are thoughtful and compassionate, and their joy is contagious.

In the spirit of caring for others, our faculty, staff, and coaches at Stephenson are second to none in their commitment to your children. This group of professionals routinely goes the extra mile to provide an environment designed to make it easy to learn, grow, and thrive. Our faculty, staff, and coaches are selfless and passionate, and their enthusiasm is inspiring.

In the spirit of giving to others, you, our parents and families, have provided your time, talent and treasure in every aspect of our school. Whether it be cheer boosters, football boosters, band boosters or basketball boosters, PTSA Members or Principal Advisory Council Members, your service of volunteering to doing concessions, being chaperones on school trips or sponsoring financially to families, it is awesome.  You, our parents and families, are supportive and generous, and your energy sustains us and lifts us up as we go along the important work of educating today’s young adults.

This Thanksgiving is a good time for all of us to reflect on our many blessings, and to continue to use our many gifts to benefit not only our beloved Stephenson Community, but also our broader society and world.

May your time with family and friends be joyful and restful. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and remember our Theme, Jaguars, All In G2G Geared to Greatness.

Good Afternoon Parents and Guardians.  This is your principal, Mr. Jones.  I am calling to let you know that today the school district’s public safety office conducted a random, unannounced contraband search.  During this process scholars and staff, myself included, were searched prior to entering the building.  This is a preventative measure the district has put in place to keep our school safe.  A letter was sent home with your scholars today to explain the process.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any question.

Thank you, have a great evening and remember our theme, Jaguars ALL IN G2G Geared to Greatness.

Good Morning Parents and Guardians,

This is your principal of Stephenson High School, Mr. Jones.

Parents, your scholar will receive their 9-week progress report on Wednesday, October 23rd.  Please be on the lookout for the great news.

Please continue to caution your scholars not to download any unauthorized software or attempt to access any unauthorized websites on their district issued chromebook.  This is a violation of the user agreement and their device can be subject to being confiscated.  The district’s IT department is monitoring scholar activity on the devices.

If you would like your scholar to take the ASVAB, which is the readiness test that individuals take for entry into the armed forces, have your scholar to register in the main counseling center by October 25th.  The test will be administered here at Stephenson on Thursday, October 30th.

Finally parents, please make sure your scholars study daily.  Even if a teacher does not assign specific work to complete, it is an effective practice to review what was covered in class that day.  This practice lets scholars know if they really understood what was covered in class and gives them confidence to participate in class the following day.

Thank you, have a great day and remember our theme Jaguars, ALL IN, G2G Geared to Greatness.

August 9, 2019

Good Morning Parents and Guardians,

This is your principal of Stephenson High School Mr. Jones. Parents I am calling to let you know that last week was great.  Scholars were dialed in on their academics.  This is an indicator that they are serious about doing well this semester.  Now it our job as teachers to create interesting, on grade level activities to keep them engaged.

I want to share a few things with you in preparation for next week:

Please place August 29th on your calendar.  We will be holding Annual Curriculum Night.  During curriculum night you have an opportunity to follow your scholar’s schedule, meet their teachers and hear the expectations and supports that are in place for their success.

During the next two weeks we will be issuing chromebooks to scholars for instructional purposes.  This year parents are not required to purchase insurance in order for your scholar to be issued a chromebook, provided your scholar turned in their chromebook, powercord and case last year. There will be several options for those parents that wish to buy insurance in the event their scholar’s chromebook is broken, lost or stolen.   Monday after school, check with your scholar to receive a Chromebook User Agreement Form that must be completed and signed by both parent and scholar before a device is issued.  No exceptions.  Once the Chromebook Agreement Form is completed scholars must submit forms to their first period teacher.  The forms can also be found on the homepage of the school’s website.

Junior and senior scholars that will be driving to school this year must purchase a parking pass from Dr. Thomas. The cost is $40. As a reminder, Stephenson High School is not an open campus meaning scholars cannot leave campus during the course of the school day.  Any scholar that violates this procedure and or transport another scholar off campus will lose their parking privileges for the remainder of the semester.  There will be no refunds.

Finally, we will be on our regular bell schedule next week.  This means that scholars will go to their 1st period class at the start of the day verses going to homeroom.  So, it is even more important that they are on time for the start of the day.

Thank you, enjoy the remainder of your weekend and remember our theme, Jaguars, All IN, G2G Geared to Greatness.

August 7, 2019

Good Evening Parent and Guardians,

This is your principal of Stephenson High School, Mr. Jones.  I wanted to let you know that we are off to a great start.   Today I just completed the last Class Expectation meeting with our scholars.  During the class expectation meetings, I met face to face with over 300 scholars per grade level to share with them the expectations for the school year.  You would have been proud of how attentive they were.

During the meeting we talked about graduation and how it does not matter what grade they are in now. The classes that they are taking are needed for graduation.  Typically, if a scholar fails to graduate from high school, it is not what they have done their last year of high school, but what they didn’t do when they were in the 9th, 10th or 11th grades which negatively impacts their senior year.  Here are a few major items we discussed during the meetings:

  • Attendance and Tardies.  It is plain and simple parents; scholars cannot learn if they are absent from school or late to class.
  • Dress Code – we do not require uniforms; however, we do have a dress code.  Please, please have your scholars review guidelines for scholar dress on our website in the scholar handbook and govern themselves accordingly.
  • Electronic devices – we are asking scholars to put their devices away when they are in the classroom and when they are walking the halls.  Scholars are not to have earbuds in their ears or dangling from the ear as they walk through the school.
  • We also explained to scholars that Stephenson High School is not an open campus.  This means that scholars are not allowed to leave campus at any point during the school day and this includes the lunch period.  Scholars are not allowed to receive deliveries to school through vendors like Uber Eats.  These items will be confiscated and discarded.

Parents, we know and understand that our scholars will make mistakes along the way.  No one is perfect.  However, the expectation is that if they do make a mistake, they are open and respectful to redirection and do not constantly repeat the violation.  You see, repeated violations will bring about more severe consequences.

Finally parents, I want to thank you for your support.  We know that we cannot be successful if we are not on the same team.

Have a great evening and remember our Theme, Jaguars, All IN G2G Geared to Greatness

August 3, 2019

Good Morning Parents and Guardians,

My name is Mr. Jones and I am your proud principal of Stephenson High School.  To our new parents and guardians to the Stephenson family I say welcome.  I want to begin by thanking you for huge turnout for Open House last Thursday.  Your support is a great indication that it is going to be another great school year here at Stephenson High school.  As you know the first day of school for scholars is Monday, August 5, 2109.  We begin allowing scholars in the building at 7:30am.  All scholars must enter the building through main entrance under the large canopy in the front of the school. Class begins at 8:10am sharp.

This week scholars will report to their homeroom class to pick up copies of their class schedules and important documents that they are to bring home to you Monday afternoon.  Homeroom charts will be posted in multiple areas around the school along with plenty of teachers and staff giving scholars assistance to scholars in locating their homeroom class.

Parents, in preparation for a great start to the year have your scholar to pull up the scholar handbook on the school’s website on their smart phone and together review school rules and procedures.  Especially those pertaining to electronic devices and scholar dress. We will enforce all rules beginning the first day of school.

Finally, I want to continue you employ you to join our PTSA.  This important organization sponsors activities like our honors programs and funds scholarships for deserving scholars.  Come support the first fundraiser of the year by attending their Back to School Skate Party next Friday, Aug 9th at the All American Skate Center in Stone Mountain.  The Cost is $8 between the hours of 7pm and 9 pm.  Don’t forget to let them know you are from Stephenson High School and wear you Stephenson High School paraphernalia to show your school spirit.

Thank you, enjoy the rest of the weekend and remember out theme Jaguars ALL IN, G2G Geared to Greatness.
